MnDOT to fund TH3 Trail
MnDOT to fund TH3 TrailThe City of Farmington, as the lead agency, received funding for the construction of a trail along TH3 between 205th Street and Willow Street. The funding is from the 2021 Metro Local Partnership Program (LPP Program) to support construction costs of the project up to $275,000.

Review of the community’s current trail network showed a gap in connectivity along the TH3 corridor. A separated trail exists from 195th Street in the northern portion of Farmington to 205th Street in Empire Township. A gap then exists from 205th Street to Willow Street where there are existing continuous pedestrian and bicycle facilities to the downtown and commercial centers that serve both communities.

The proposed project includes construction of a new trail extension from 205th Street to Willow Street. The trail will utilize the existing bridge over the Vermillion River with a barrier separating trail users from the adjacent travel lanes. 

This project will be completed in conjunction with other safety improvements along the TH3 corridor within Farmington and Empire Township. MnDOT, Empire Township and Farmington have worked collaboratively to define projects and identify available funding programs to complete the work. Other projects include turn lane improvements on TH3 from Chesterfield Way to 197th Street in the Township and turn lane improvements at 209th Street in Farmington. 

“Project development for the turn lane improvements has been underway for the last year and we will see work occurring during the 2020/2021 construction seasons,” said Empire Township Engineer Brian Hilgardner. City of Farmington Public Works Director Katy Gehler added, “This project is another great example of how the state, township and city have been working together to address safety concerns along this corridor.”
